CAMBODIA
Best known as both the home of the colossal temples of Angkor Wat and for the brutal Khmer Rouge era of the 1970s and later civil war, Cambodian history encompasses some of humanity’s greatest artistic accomplishments.
The history is what draws most travelers here, but this Southeast Asian nation has more to offer for those who linger longer than a short temple hop to Siem Reap. The coastline of sandy white beaches tempts every sun sloth. The jungle-swathed countryside is geared up for the more intrepid, and the buzzing capital of Phnom Penh envelops visitors in the frenetic pulse of contemporary Cambodian city life.
WHERE TO GO
Cambodia’s cities are gateways for adventures into this captivating country: it’s through them that the magic of Cambodia and the kindness of its people is unveiled. While the larger cities are rapidly modernizing, a visit to the famous site of Angkor offers a chance to see temples unrivaled in scale and grandeur in southeast Asia. There are also some smaller towns and villages that provide a chance to experience a more traditional way of life, including treks into the jungle and to see even more fascinating ancient ruins.
PHNOM PENH
Phnom Penh, the largest city in Cambodia, has been its capital since French colonial days. Once known as “the pearl of Asia,” Phnom Penh is considered one of the prettiest of the cities the French built in Indochina though the city is still recovering from war and revolution. Top attractions include the Royal Palacea and the Silver Pagoda.
SIEM REAP
Siem Reap is a dusty, fun and energetic city. Most visitors to Southeast Asia will find themselves in Siem Reap at some point, if not particularly for the city itself but for its world famous temples of Angkor. The city of Siem Reap itself is a place for tourists to let their hair down, enjoy dinner and drinks with friends and dance the night away.
SIHANOUKVILLE
Sleepy and secluded, Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s premier seaside resort city. The little fishing port has become a magnet for tourists who want to kick back and relax along Cambodia’s coastline. The white sand beach is edged by small shacks and bars where you can find people reclining with a drink, while they spend days gazing out to sea.
BATTAMBANG
Battambang, with its crumbling colonial architecture and stunning surrounding countryside, is proving to be somewhat of an artistic hub. Battambang isn’t only a space for Cambodia’s future artistic talents, but also a place to take in ancient temples and pagodas. The dreamily dozy city is the perfect antidote to the swirling city streets of Cambodia’s bigger cities.
KRATIE
Kratie is a small town located on the banks of the Mekong River and is dominated by a central marketplace surrounded by old, French colonial buildings. There’s no large scale tourism, but plenty of backpackers pour through here during the peak season. It is the place in Cambodia to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins.
KAMPOT
Kampot is the gateway to Bokor National Park, famed for its abandoned French hill station, pleasant climate and lush primary rainforest. Kampot also offers visitors the opportunity to go boating and rafting on the river that winds through town, as well as take in scenic waterfalls along the route.
WHAT TO DO
Home of the famous Angkor Wat and numerous other temples, this country is intoxicating in its beauty, to say the least. Apart from the historical and the cultural, the country has much else to offer such as tropical beaches, colonial buildings, an abundance of natural attractions and tonnes of restaurants serving delicious cuisine.
ANGKOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
Accessed from Siem Reap, the temples of the Angkorian period are so ambitious in scale and in the majesty of their construction, that Angkor Wat is rated as one of the world’s must-see ancient sites. The main highlights after Angkor Wat are the tree-root clasped temple of Ta Prohm, the Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom, and Preah Khan.
SILVER PAGODA
Located within the Royal Palace compound in Phnom Penh, the Silver Pagoda houses many national treasures such as gold and jeweled Buddha statues. Most notable is a small 17th century baccarat crystal Buddha (the Emerald Buddha of Cambodia) and a life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha decorated with 9584 diamonds.
CENTRAL MARKET
Also known as Phsar Thmei, the Central Market of Cambodia is one of the largest markets in Asia. It is a perfect place for shopping. You will find everything in the market, from intricate gold and silver ornaments, clothes, antique coins, electronic goods, and a lot more. To curb hunger, there are plenty of food stalls where you can hang on.
BANTEAY SREY BUTTERFLY CENTRE
Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre is an exhibition of thousands of native species of free-flying butterflies in Cambodia. The center gives tourists a chance to witness butterfly feeding and the life cycle of many species. Various butterfly species fascinate the visitors with their vibrant colors. Apart from butterflies, there is an assortment of incredible plants.
SIHANOUKVILLE BEACHES
The beaches here are Cambodia’s top destination for sand and sun holidays. There’s something for every kind of beach-goer here. Sokha Beach and Independence Beach boast luxury hotels. Brash Ochheuteal Beach and the Serendipity Beach area are the popular sandy strips and now have emerged as one of Southeast Asia’s backpacker party areas.
PREAH VIHEAR TEMPLE
Built on the Khmer Empire and an extraordinary masterpiece, the Preah Vihear Temple is an ancient Khmer temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated at the top of a cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, the temple encompasses a series of sanctuaries linked with a system of staircases. The site is well-preserved due to its remote setting.
