CHINA

The most populous nation in the world, China’s vast territory encompasses diverse peoples and places; all with their own unique cultures, customs and ways of life.

While many of the country’s most important attractions are in and around the largest cities, some of the smaller towns and cities offer their own tourist treasures and are among the most beautiful places to visit in China. Thanks to China’s rapidly expanding economy, its infrastructure has grown at an astounding rate, and it is now relatively easy to embark on some serious city hopping.

WHERE TO GO

Its cities beautifully highlight this rich cultural diversity and one could spend a lifetime exploring all the sights they have to offer. With landscapes ranging from the dramatic limestone formations of Guilin to the arid Gobi Desert, it certainly seems like several countries rolled into one.

BEIJING

The political, economic and cultural centre of China, Beijing boasts historic attractions few other cities can match. Whilst on the surface Beijing may seem modern, with its soaring skyscrapers and vast freeways, underneath it has retained gems from its imperial past. From here, the magnificent Great Wall is also just a short drive away.

HONG KONG

This city of skyscrapers lies on Victoria Bay and behind it, a beautiful backdrop of forest-coated mountains only adds to the magnificence of the scenery. The nearby Victoria Peak is a great vantage point. Over 70% of Hong Kong is made up of sprawling parks and mountains, offering an array of hiking opportunities.

SHANGHAI

Situated on the Yangtze River estuary, Shanghai epitomises China’s rise to global power status. Home to the second tallest tower in the world, this mega city is known for its glimmering skyline, best viewed by strolling along the waterfront area known as the Bund. The city is also famous for its shopping, with Nanjing Road being China’s premier shopping street.

XI’AN

With a plethora of historical sites littered around the city, it certainly is tough to see everything in Xi’an. The Army of Terracotta Warriors and Horses however is an absolute must and they really are spellbinding to behold. The city is also surrounded by a 14th century wall, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride.

LHASA

The capital of Tibet and the center of Tibetan cultural and religious life, Lhasa is a mesmerising city to visit and it is situated in a beautiful and mountainous environment in the Himalayas. “Lhasa” is Tibetan for “place of the gods”, and is revered as such. There are many sites and religious sites in the city proper and its suburbs.

CHENGDU

Found in the Sichuan province, Chengdu is the hometown of Giant Pandas. Although there are giant pandas in zoos in various places around China, the best place to see pandas is in Chengdu. Besides giant panda, Chengdu is also famous for delicious Sichuan food like kung pao chicken and spicy hotpot.

WHAT TO DO

With lovely temples, palaces and gardens on display, the best cities in China have a plethora of attractions for you to delight in and that’s without even mentioning two of its greatest tourist draws, the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Army. Whether you choose to travel aboard a luxury cruise ship through the picturesque Yangtze gorges, or seek out the tranquility of an ancient temple, this country is full of incredible experiences and sightseeing possibilities.

THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

“Nobody can be a true hero unless he has been on the Great Wall” goes the popular Chinese saying, one that clearly demonstrates the importance placed upon this unique ancient monument. The magnificent Great Wall of China – known in Chinese as ‘Changcheng’, or the ‘Long Wall’ – stretches more than 6,000 km.

The IMPERIAL PALACE

China’s largest and most important building, the Forbidden City, also known as the Imperial Palace, is situated in the very heart of Beijing and is a must-see when visiting the country. Highlights include the five white marble Golden River Bridges, the Hall of Supreme Harmony, a 35-meter-tall building housing the imperial throne, and the exquisite emperor’s banquet hall.

THE TERRACOTTA ARMY

It was while digging wells on the outskirts of Xi’an in the 1970s that farmers stumbled across what was to be China’s most important archeological find: the Terracotta Army. Distributed over three large underground pits and built to guard the First Emperor’s tomb, the find included more than 8,000 life-size warriors around 280 BC.

THE SUMMER PALACE

An easy 15-kilometer commute from Beijing, the sumptuous Imperial Summer Palace (Yíhé Yuán) is set amid more than 700 acres of beautiful parkland and is one of China’s most visited attractions. Highlights include the magnificent Hall of Benevolence and Longevity (Renshou Dian), with its throne and the beautiful Great Theatre.

RESEARCH BASE OF PANDA

No visit to China would be complete without at least one panda experience. While the country’s top zoos boast many fine specimens of these fascinating creatures, the best place to see them in a close approximation to their natural habitat is at the excellent Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu.

ZHANGJIAJIE NATIONAL PARK

Zhangjiajie is famous for its precarious peaks, limpid streams, dense forests, large karst caves, and biodiversity. It is one of the must-see scenic areas in China. It was thrust into foreign travelers’ eyes via the movie Avatar. The Hallelujah Mountains were inspired (in part) by peaks like Heavenly Pillar in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
