The most popular place to visit in Laos, Luang Prabang is an historic city that once served as the capital of the Kingdom of Laos. Luang Prabang stands in front of a backdrop of a magnificent hilltop temple. Every visitor should start one day off by giving alms to the local monks. More than 1,200 monks live here that sometimes the whole city can seem like a monastery.

VIENTIANE

Vientiane is the capital of Laos set up on the banks of the Mekong river and is designed as per the French architecture. This place is home to numerous temples as well as to other bars and restaurants and has an ambiance that will definitely keep you mesmerized. The popular tourist attraction in this city, also known as “the city of sandalwood,” is a Buddhist stupa, Pha That Luang.

VANG VIENG

Surrounded by wild fields in Central Laos, Vang Vieng is a small tourist town popular with party-seeking young backpackers. The town is home to all sorts of accommodation, from hostels to guest houses, as well as plenty of bars and restaurants that are open until late during the main tourist season. One of the most popular things to do is the infamous river tubing.

PHONSAVAN

Located in central Laos, Phonsavan is the capital of Xieng Khouang province. This popular city in Laos is known for the fertile plateau lined with rolling hills, caves, waterfalls and series of archaeological sites consisting of the mysterious plain of jars. Surrounded by undulating hills and pine forests, the scenic town of Phonsavan has a great climate all year-round.

LUANG NAMTHA

Luang Namtha is located in the north of Laos and is the capital of the province of Laos of the same name. Luang Namtha city lies on the bank of the river Tha and borders with China on the northern front and Burma on the northwest. Luang Namtha attracts nature lovers from all over and provides a base for trekking and biking to the nearby tribal villages. 

PAKXE

Pakxe the third most populous and best city in Laos to visit. It is also the capital of Champasak District. After its establishment by the French rulers in 1905, the city served as an administrative center. Today this city is home to the Champasak Provincial Museum. Due to its collection of both historical documents and artifacts, the museum is important to the history of the province.

The country is divided into north, central, and southern regions, each with lush landscapes and an inviting atmosphere. The unspoiled jungle habitat of Laos means you might see an elephant strolling on your way to breakfast or monks walking the roadways. Its rich cultural diversity comes from the 49 ethnic groups that influence the food, arts, customs, and festivals in the country.

VIENG XAI

The Vieng Xai caves are an extensive network of caves that served as hidden city during the Vietnam War. The area was home to the Communist army, who were fighting the royalist forces based in Vientiane and was bombed by the US army. Up to 23,000 people lived in the caves, which contained a hospital, military barracks, bakeries, shops, and even a theater.

KUANG SI FALLS

The cascading Kuang Si Falls is the definition of serenity. This three-tiered waterfall is set deep in the heart of the jungle, surrounded by green vegetation and jagged limestone cliffs. A shimmering turquoise pool sits at the base of the falls, inviting you to partake in a refreshing dip. It’s also possible to hike to the top of Kuang Si Falls for epic views over the countryside.

BOKEO NATURE RESERVE

The Bokeo Nature Reserve was created to protect its population of the black-cheeked gibbon. A visit to Bokeo Nature Reserve is not complete without a stay at the Gibbon Experience, an eco tourism conservation project. Guests stay in tree houses and travel by zip line through the forests in search of the Black Gibbon.

TAD SAE WATERFALLS

Tad Sae Waterfalls is surrounded by a green jungle, which adds to the beauty as the water pours over the yellow limestone rocks. You’ll find plenty of Laotian families congregating here for a swim or picnic. Take a soak in the crystal-clear pools, or simply sunbathe on one of the provided sun loungers. You’ll also find full facilities like restaurants, shops, and cafes nearby.

WAT XIENG THONG

This Buddhist temple is one of the most elaborate temples in the country and a stunning testament to traditional Laotian art. Inside, you’ll find gold stenciling of mythological creatures and deities painted over the dark red and black walls. There are also intricate gilded motifs carved into the walls and doors of the different halls.

TUBE THE NAM SONG

Soak in the scenic landscape of Vang Vieng with a relaxing float down the Nam Song River. It’s a popular attraction for both locals and backpackers, who come to enjoy the cool waters. As you tube down the river, you can stop at one of the numerous bars that line the banks. Spend the afternoon there partying, or take a bucket of booze back to your tube to continue the float.
