MOROCCO

From the glistening waters of the Mediterranean to the sandy plains of the Sahara, Morocco has fascinated and enticed travelers for thousands of years.

Morocco is a journey into a timeless, tranquil world of cute coastal villages, colorful-painted towns that cling to hillsides, and remote outposts defended by fairy-tale adobe forts. This fascinating country is a merging of the African and Arab worlds and is steeped in age-old customs. It’s no wonder Morocco has been feted by artists and writers for decades and continues to enchant all who visit.

WHERE TO GO

From French to Spanish and others in between, each of Morocco’s cities whether they be cosmopolitan metropolises or traditional medieval towns are ready for you to discover. The cities in Morocco perfectly blend the styles of Europe and Sub-Sahara in the energy they exude.

MARRAKECH

Marrakech has been a key trading hub for many years. The main market place, Jemaa el-Fnaa in the city’s medina, is a hot and cramped experience for most people. Everything and anything is on sale, from monkeys to musical instruments. As night falls, the main square changes and gives way to steaming food stalls.

FEZ

Once the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco, Fez exudes culture and history. Well-known for its famous small, red hats, the city also has many compelling sites to take in. Fez’s emblematic medina is a huge pedestrianized sprawl that oozes ambience and history. It can seem completely overwhelming to many visitors.

OUARZAZATE

The gateway to the Sahara Desert, Ouarzazate sits to the south of the High Atlas Mountains. This small and dusty desert city is dominated by the colossal Taourirt Kasbah. The palace boasts amazing views across the mountainous and red landscape. In fact, it is so distinct that has been used in many movies.

MEKNES

Dating back to the 11th Century, the old city of Meknes was once the capital of imperial Morocco. The Sultan at the time developed the city, building high walls and huge doors to protect it, and creating elaborate and ornate Moorish-Spanish-style buildings. The city’s historic blend of European and Islamic design can be seen in its many monuments.

ESSAOUIRA

Essaouira is a serene coastal city with a distinctly European vibe. Essaouira boasts pretty, sandy beaches, but the strong winds make sunbathing out of the question. The harbor and old city walls add a depth to the city’s history and, with its small lanes and ancient streets, make for the perfect to discover new and interesting secrets hidden among the walls.

CASABLANCA

The port city of Casablanca is one of the more modern cities in Morocco. There are cool night clubs you could visit and go shopping at the endless Morocco Mall which is the second-biggest shopping centre on the continent. The Mauresque architecture which is a gorgeous fusion of the arabesque and the Parisian is all around you.

WHAT TO DO

Morocco’s attractions offer an eye-opening taste of the exotic, with snake charmers and conjurers, souks piled high with hordes of treasures, and endless glasses of mint tea. It’s also an adventure into some of North Africa’s most stunning scenery, with the desert on its doorstep and the craggy heights of the Atlas Mountains beyond.

MARRAKESH MEDINA

The bustling and vibrant buzz of Marrakesh medina sums up Morocco for many visitors and is a major tourist attraction. Once inside the medina itself, you enter a world of maze-like alleyways and shopkeeper hustle. It’s an experience full of colorful and noisy local life and not to be missed on your Moroccan sightseeing trails.

VOLUBILIS

Morocco’s number one Roman ruin is a feast for history lovers, with a clutch of remarkable mosaics still interred where they were unearthed. This site is also full of tumbled columns and temple remnants, standing as reminders that even the greatest empires eventually crumble.

BAHIA PALACE

This magnificent peacock of a palace was built in the late 19th century as the residence of the Grand Vizier Bou Ahmed, who served Sultan Moulay al-Hassan I. The interior decoration is a dazzling display of zellige tiles, painted ceilings, and ornate wrought-iron features showcasing the opulent lives of those high up in the sultan’s favor at that time.

BOU JELOUD GARDENS

For a time-out from the hustle and bustle of Fes medina, head to these formal gardens, which sit just outside the medina walls, near the main medina entrance, Bab Boujloud. The gardens are well kept and landscaped and provide a much needed shot of green in the city. Come here around sunset for strolling the trails between planted flower beds.

TOUBKAL NATIONAL PARK

About 57 kilometers south of Marrakesh, this national park is the country’s most popular. This is mostly due to it being home to Morocco’s (and North Africa’s) highest mountain, Djebel Toubkal, as well as a number of fantastic walking opportunities that range from multi-day trekking adventures to afternoon hikes.

CATHEDRAL DU SACRE COEUR

This graceful cathedral was built in the 1930s, and its architecture is a harmonious blend of both European and Moroccan style. Unfortunately, it has been left to wither in the past few decades, and is now in need of serious restoration. If you’re lucky, the guardian will allow you inside where you can capture a sense of this building’s past glory.
