SAUDI ARABIA

Saudi Arabia is famous for oil, to be the origin of Islam, Arabian horses, the world’s largest sand desert (Rub’ Al Khali), the world’s largest oasis (Al-Ahsa), Arabian coffee, countless palaces, veiled women and countless mosques.

The birthplace and spiritual home of Islam, Saudi Arabia is rich in attractions and stirring symbolism. For Muslims, the cities of Mecca and Medina, rich in Prophetic significance, have no equal, while the carved temples of Madain Saleh, known as the second Petra, and the sophisticated rock art at Jubbah are the Kingdom’s greatest pre-Islamic treasures.

WHERE TO GO

Traverse the arid desert lands, the birthplace of Islam, visiting the historic city of Jeddah, the mountainous landscapes around Ta’if and the natural wonder of the Al Waba volcanic crater. Fascinating Riyadh is a showpiece for modern Saudi Arabia, while Jeddah’s World Heritage coral architecture whisks you back to the history of this bustling pilgrim port. The pristine, azure waters of the Red Sea ache to be explored.

RIYADH

Often referred to as Saudi’s capital of culture, Riyadh showcases the Saudi Arabia’s beauty and wonder. Once a walled, mud-brick way station along desert trading routes, Riyadh (meaning ‘garden’) from afar is a picture of soaring modern towers rising up above the surrounding desert.

MECCA

Mecca is only accessible by Muslims, who often describe the moment they first lay eyes on the city’s sacred Kaaba as an overwhelmingly emotional experience. Sun-bleached homes still nestle in the rocky hillsides and everywhere you look men dressed in two simple cotton sheets wander its streets.

MEDINA

Medina is known as the ‘city of the Prophet’. The modern city, like Mecca, is centred around a grand mosque, the Prophet’s Mosque, which has a series of large numbered gates often used to navigate the pedestrianised area in and around it.

JEDDAH

The historic crossroads of pilgrims and traders, and the traditional gateway to Mecca, Jeddah is the most fascinating of Saudi Arabia’s major cities, with a cosmopolitan and liberal air not present anywhere else in the Kingdom.

ABHA

Abha is the ideal base to explore the Asir National Park and its mysterious villages. This compact town, nestled in the green, mountainous interior, also boasts historic neighbourhoods of decaying mud houses with unique local architectural features.

TABUK

Tabuk has a bustling and extensive souq that is worth exploring and some of the most enthusiastic locals when it comes to tourism and diving, which is why Tabuk is also a good place to arrange visits to the surrounding region, and pristine white beaches.

WHAT TO DO

Saudi Arabia stretches from coral seas and vast escarpments to lush oases and ancient cities. It’s a land of adventures, stories and remote mountain villages. Whether you want to discover the the rock-carved buildings and cliffs or go for a spot of shopping, Saudia Arabia is full of natural wonders.

THE EDGE OF THE WORLD

These cliffs rise dramatically from the desert, stretching toward the sky like a great natural wall. When you stand atop them and look toward the horizon, you have a prime view of the sky as it seems to melt into the barren earth.

MADA’IN SALEH

The ancient Nabataean ruins in the far northwest of the country are remarkable, not just for their preserved carvings reminiscent of Petra in Jordan to the north, but also for their stark and beautiful desert setting.

AL MASMAK FORTRESS

The fort is situated near busy streets, surrounded by a bustling market with shops selling everything from clothes, jewelry, gold, and souvenirs. Inside, the fort houses a collection of historical artifacts, including guns along with a working well and a small mosque for its occupants.

MALL OF ARABIA

Mall of Arabia is an architectural masterpiece in the making, influenced by the rich heritage of the Arab world. Mall of Arabia let you experience deep-rooted heritage, exquisite architecture, a world-class shopping experience, and incomparable entertainment opportunities, all under one roof.

AL-AHSA OASIS

Al-Hasa is a traditional oasis region in eastern Saudi Arabia. The wetland comprises a long, narrow river, flowing in an east-southeast direction from Hofuf and Abqaiq towards al-‘Uqair. The area probably supports a fair diversity of oasis fishes.

KING FAHD’S FOUNTAIN

Visible from all across the city, King Fahd’s Fountain is a much-loved Jeddah landmark, rising against the backdrop of the Red Sea. At 312-meters high, it is the tallest fountain in the world, sending plumes of water shooting skywards at speeds of more than 350kph.
